More shippers contracting with C.H. Robinson Worldwide shifted loads from railroad to highway in the second quarter after seeing intermodal rail service deteriorate.

The Minneapolis-based company said intermodal rail service incrementally improved in the second quarter compared with the first three months of the year, but it expects rail service to remain a challenge for the rest of the year, according to a second-quarter presentation. Poor rail service kept intermodal growth at 1 percent in the second quarter, but higher pricing and more profitable freight boosted intermodal net revenue 9.5 percent year-over-year to nearly $10.9 million.
