The Port of Long Beach reported this past May was the busiest month at the port since October 2007, officials said Wednesday.

The increased volume, however, was in no small part the result of a large number of empty containers being sent to other countries because the volume of imports coming to Long Beach terminals was greater than the volume of exports being sent to overseas customers.

In total, more than 635,000 standard container units moved through the port last month. That signifies a 6 percent increase when compared to cargo volumes recorded during May 2014.
