Samsung Heavy Industries set a new record for the world’s largest container ship order this week with the signing of a deal to build six 21,100-teu container ships from OOCL.

The order of six ultra-large container ships from the Hong Kong-based shipping giant was finalised on April 1 and is valued at about US $950-million.

An order for four 20,100-teu container ships from MOL in Japan on March 2, 2015, was an industry benchmark at the time, but this latest order surpasses it by some margin.

The South Korean shipyard is setting itself apart as an ultra-large container ship builder with ten of the 12 vessels of more than 20,000-teu ordered thus far globally being built by the yard.
