DP World transhipment hub, Dominican Republic

The DP World Caucedo transshipment hub in the Dominican Republic is moving forward with upgrades to accommodate the larger vessels that will be able to traverse the expanded Panama Canal next year and provide shippers with more warehouse capacity.

With a limited number of U.S. East Coast and Caribbean ports able to handle the larger ships that will come through the canal, Caribbean deep-sea ports, including Manzanillo, Panama and Cartagena, Colombia, are vying to gain more transshipment cargo.

“The objective of the logistics center, which is in the port’s free zone, is to attract new international customers who use the Dominican Republic as a distribution hub,” said Johansen, who confirmed that the first warehouse “is basically full.”
