Workers for the Panama Canal announced Wednesday the beginning of a strike to demand salary increases and better working conditions.

Gustavo Herrera, secretary of the construction workers union, said that this protest was in response to the company refusing to perform an exhaustive audit. He went on to say that there are more than 120,000 workers who have not been completely paid.

Herrero explained that the union was requesting that the auditors and the Ministry of Work participate in this audit and that the workers are asking that everyone be paid for the days that they are owed.
