Container traffic at the Port of Oakland rose 4.3% year-over-year in January to 205,841 industry-standard twenty-foot-equivalent units, or TEUs, with positive turnaround in the export market.
Loaded exports grew 2.1% to 74,883, including a 20% jump in pork business and an 18% rise in beef shipments.
The Port of Oakland was able to come out ahead of year-ago levels due to an increase in empty containers, which tend to spike in January as U.S. cargo owners quickly return equipment to Asia to fulfill orders before the factory shutdown for the Lunar New Year in February.
