From ‘More cargo, more jobs expected as Port of Hueneme gets deeper’ in the Ventura County Star:

The Port of Hueneme will be deepened from its current 35 feet to 40 feet under a deal approved this week, a move expected to bring in more than 200,000 tons of additional cargo each year.

The deepening project has been almost 20 years in the making, and work is expected to begin between October and December.

The port’s chief operations officer, John Demers said the main effect of the deepening project will be to increase the amount of tonnage ships can bring to the only deepwater port between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

He said some ships now must decrease their loads to safely use the port.
