President Barack Obama has nominated former Rep. Dan Maffei to serve as a commissioner on the Federal Maritime Commission, an independent federal agency.

Maffei, a Democrat who represented the Syracuse area in Congress for two terms, would become one of five commissioners overseeing the agency that regulates the U.S. international ocean transportation system.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Maffei would succeed Commissioner Richard A. Lidinsky, Jr.
