The Port of Oakland handled 213,260 cargo containers in May, making it the port’s busiest month in four years, port officials announced Monday.

May was the third month in a row in which the port experienced year-over-year volume increases. Loaded import container volume increased 4.5 percent and the number of empty containers shipped back to their point of origin increased by 20 percent, port officials said. Exports decreased by 5.6 percent last month, however.

The strong U.S. dollar has made American exports more expensive, according to port officials.
