Unions ready to battle against TPP trade deal

Paul Ryan, Barack Obama

OBAMA AND GOP: The White House boasts GOP allies in pushing for the TPP, including House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. (shown here), and Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka put lawmakers on notice Tuesday that votes in favor of giving President Obama fast-track authority for a pending multilateral trade pact will be used against them in the 2016 elections.

“This agreement will shut the door on millions of American workers for a long time to come. Inequality will grow, jobs will be lost, wages will be lowered, and this country’s middle class will continue to get dinged,” he said. “I think a proper trade (deal) is good if it benefits everybody. But we haven’t seen that yet, and we have no reason to believe TPP will be that either.”
