Panama’s new President Juan Carlos Varela kicked off his term in office by announcing plans to carry out water and infrastructure projects.

On taking office on July 1, Varela pledged “expansion of the Panama Canal would be completed successfully, protecting the state’s interests.”

During his first cabinet meeting, Varela announced plans to provide potable water coverage 24 hours a day and to eliminate the use of latrines across the country.
