Great Success ship

An incinerator on the Japan-bound Great Success ‘posed a significant fire hazard,’ and inspectors found a fire door that could not be opened from the inside, leaving crew members with no way to exit the room in the event of a fire.

The Coast Guard has detained a 553-foot freighter at the Port of Longview after discovering that it had numerous safety violations that posed significant fire danger, the agency announced Friday.

The inspectors Tuesday ordered the vessel to remain at anchor in Longview until the ship’s crew have addressed the violations, Littlejohn said. Among the problems discovered were excessive oil and water in the bilges, excessive oil in the engine room, and oil-saturated insulation throughout the engine room.

A leaking emergency fire pump was flooding the fire pump room, and all three generators and the boiler had active oil leaks, causing oil to pool beneath the equipment.
