Mayor Ed Lee on Monday appointed William “Willie” Adams, a former longshoreman and current official in the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, to San Francisco’s Port Commission.

Adams spent 24 years as a longshoreman and marine clerk, starting in 1978 in Tacoma, Wash. He was elected international secretary-treasurer of the ILWU in 2003 and moved to San Francisco.

“The San Francisco Port is a vital engine in our city’s economic health, and now with the exciting transformation along our iconic waterfront, the port will greatly benefit from Willie’s experience as a longshoreman and an advocate for workers and fiscal responsibility,” Lee said in a statement.
