A top local public official is resigning amid a clash over spending concerns.

Port of Bellingham Commissioner Mike McAuley confirmed [this week] that Executive Director Charlie Sheldon is leaving the port.

Port Commissioner Scott Walker … told KGMI last month he disagreed with Sheldon sending a port official and a consultant to the Bahamas for an aviation conference, as well as other port financial decisions he said were unwise.

While Sheldon at that time declined to respond, McAuley went on the defense for him, saying Walker’s concerns were unfounded.
