Candidates for Morrow County commissioner, state Senate District 29 and county surveyor met with community members Thursday evening at the Port of Morrow to talk jobs, natural resources, coal and budget issues facing the region.

Candidates faced questions submitted by community members prior to the forum, including their position on the Morrow Pacific project. The project by the Ambre Energy firm would bring coal by rail from Wyoming mines for off-loading at the Port of Morrow for eventual shipment to Asia.

County commissioner Leann Rea added that Japan, Taiwan and South Korea are burning coal and will receive it one way or another, whether the product goes through Boardman or Canada. This way the county receives the revenue, she said.
