Horizon ship

The shipping company Horizon Lines will pay a $1 million fine and contribute $500,000 to Bay Area environmental projects after pleading guilty to violating oil pollution laws.

Federal prosecutors said an inspection of the container ship Horizon Enterprise at the Port of Oakland in October found that a valve had been opened to prevent meters from recording oil discharges.

In pleading guilty to two felony charges, the company admitted that engineers had disabled equipment designed to prevent release of oily wastes into the ocean, and had falsified the ship’s records to conceal their actions, prosecutors said. They said Horizon Lines admitted similar conduct on the ship for the past several years.
