Costa Rica pineapple farm

Costa Rica is the main supplier of the fruit to the United States and the EU, but it suffers strong criticism for the poor labor conditions and exploitation.

Costa Rica opposition Congressmen denounced the violation of worker’s rights and environmental regulations in pineapple farms by transnational companies through government indifference, saying, “They harass those who chose to become union members. Their wages are cut, their working conditions deteriorate, occupational health is ignored and they are forced to renounce all forms of organization to claim their rights.”

Claudio Monge, Carmen Muñoz and Carmen Granados of the Accion Ciudadana Party and Jose Maria Villalta of Frente Amplio exposed the conditions of work in the sector and threatened to denounce the Labor Ministry to international organizations for its indifference.
