Dar es Salaam port, Tanzania

Denial of salary review and racial discrimination are some of the issues behind the strike at Dar es Salaam port, Tanzania.

The following editorial was published yesterday in the Tanzania Citizen, on the second day of a strike:

Resolve grievances at Ticts

Reports to the effect that a strike by employees of the Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS) was yet to be resolved two days after it all started is very worrisome. The continued industrial action by workers at Ticts, which handles a significant portion of cargo at the Dar es Salaam port, has dire economic implications for the country.

Let us hope that the parties responsible will look into allegations by the workers suggesting that their terms of employment have been violated. A probe should study their complaints that some of them are denied the right to purchase company shares, regular salary and allowance reviews as well as protection from racial discrimination.

It is in the country’s interests that problems facing the port of Dar es Salaam, a key supply chain in Tanzania and the neighbouring countries in eastern, central and southern Africa, are solved the soonest.
