A protest by nine sailors has left a tanker ship stranded in Sydney’s Gore Bay.

Shell Petroleum decided in April to contract the jobs to Canadian company Teekay, and says that firm subsequently made the decision to retrench the men.

Bruce Frary, a 26-year sailor, said, “We think that a safe, well managed, well maintained Australian vessel would be the optimum for moving these types of vessels around Australia.”
