Trucks at Port of Los Angeles

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Sept. 27 ruled that the port cannot force freight-hauling companies to directly hire drivers as employees.

The Port of Los Angeles will not challenge a federal appeals court ruling that tossed out the controversial employee mandate portion of the Clean Trucks Program, officials announced Thursday.

The move puts to rest a protracted three-year legal battle over whether independent owner-operator drivers should be banned from entering terminals at the nation’s busiest port.
