Whatcom County Planning and Development fined SSA Marine $2,000 for unauthorized road-grading work at the Gateway Pacific Terminal site at Cherry Point.

The company also will have to pay $2,400 for county staff costs in dealing with the issue.

Whatcom County Council member Carl Weimer discovered the grading work in July and reported it to the planning department. The company has acknowledged that “mistakes were made” in the grading work. County officials said the activity harmed protected wetlands and went well beyond the scope of work that had been approved by the county.
