Truck drivers at the Gateway Terminals India (GTI) container terminal in Mumbai have been guaranteed decent pay and working conditions, following a three-year struggle to secure a collective bargaining agreement with the port operator.
The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has claimed that in the past workers had been violently attacked after opting to join a union and has led to a “sometimes bloody struggle”.
It said: “It once again proves that global network terminal operators can and should hold their subcontractors to a decent standard of behaviour.”
