The Daily Astorian highlighted the candidates in the May 17 port commission race involving longshoreman Bill Hunsinger, the only incumbent who’s being challenged:

“The Port needs to grow and make money,” Hunsinger said. “This Port was an authority Port in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and that can come back.” The trick, as he sees it, is to find an industry that works for Clatsop County.

Liddiard, 39, believes one answer lies with rail service. Hunsinger emphasized rail service for cargo, but Liddiard is thinking of rail service for passenger trains.

“I’ve seen the port at its very best (in the past),” Hunsinger said. “(I knew) if we did all the right things, we could bring the port back to life.” Logs are one way the port is doing just that, he believes.
