Japanese autos post tsunami

Japanese automakers including Nissan, Honda, and Toyota have closed several manufacturing facilities following the March 11 tsunami.

Not only is Japan the top source of foreign direct investment in Los Angeles County, more than 1,000 Japanese companies have operations in the Southland, making the region home to the second-largest concentration of Japanese companies outside of Japan. … Sony, Toshiba, Canon, Sharp, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic and Sanyo – all of which have a presence in Southern California – have indefinitely curtailed production at their facilities in Japan.

Toyota operates a massive distribution facility in Torrance and a 68-acre auto import terminal at the Port of Long Beach. The company has closed 12 plants in Japan with profit loss that analysts say could exceed $72 million for every day of lost production. … Nissan, Honda and Suzuki also have suspended operations at numerous manufacturing facilities across Japan.
