Longshore & Shipping News imageLongshore workers and our jobs are affected  by many factors around the world: the economy,  the Panama Canal, investments in port infrastructure, privatization of docks, global trade, and much more. Even the weather affects grain harvests, which make a difference on the docks when it’s time to move the grain from rail to ship for export.

The Coast Longshore Division has developed a web site that posts daily updates on many of these developments, called Longshore & Shipping News.

The site is on the Internet at: www.LongshoreShippingNews.com.

At least twice per day since August of 2009, new articles and photos from around the world have been posted for public viewing.

The articles posted do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Coast Longshore Division, but they do reflect the shipping industry through the eyes of the mainstream media across the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, and virtually anywhere that our major carriers operate.

The archive of articles contains more than 1,000 news items, sorted by categories like “ports” and “shipping lines.”

Readers with a special interest, such as “Grain,” can click on the key word from within an article, and the site will automatically search for and list all articles related to grain.

The site also has a translation feature that allows readers to translate the site into 48 different languages.

“We have people from all over the world working on the docks, and we know the site has international readers, so the translation feature allows more people to keep up on industry news,” said Ray Familathe, ILWU International Vice President for the Mainland.
