A threatened strike at the Port of New York and New Jersey was averted when negotiators for the International Longshoremen’s Association and port maintenance contractors agreed on a two-year contract extension.

The agreement between ILA Locals 1804-1 and 1814 and the Metropolitan Marine Maintenance Contractors Association will extend through 2012. Negotiators reached the agreement before the previous Metro contract expired at the end of 2010. The deal covers workers who maintain and repair intermodal equipment and secure containers on ships with lashings.
