WorkSafe is set to investigate safety concerns relating to one of the operators on the Gorgon LNG project on Barrow Island.

The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) wants an audit of cranes used by contractor Royal Boskalis Westminster, saying there are safety issues with the equipment.

The union is also concerned WorkSafe has waived the need for operators of some cranes to have high risk licences for offshore use.

The union had threatened to stop work over the issue, which would have been the first time industrial action has been taken on the Gorgon site.

The MUA is required to make submissions to WorkSafe by the end of the week.
