Del Monte in Camden

Del Monte's move from Camden (shown in this photo) to privately-owned Gloucester Terminal is expected to cost the ILA about 200 jobs.

Del Monte asked if Gloucester Terminal could handle its ship following a picket [at the Camden terminal] by International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1291. Management agreed and workers at Gloucester belonging to the International Dockworkers Union Local No. 1 began unloading about 3 p.m. Gloucester Terminals will now handle Del Monte’s 70 ships a year rather than wait until Oct. 1 as planned.

While ILA workers make an average of $24.50 an hour at the Camden terminal, members of International Dockworkers Union Local 1 at Gloucester make less than half with minimal to no benefits, said Boise Butler, president of  ILA Local 1291.
