The Port of Astoria Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a five-year lease of 3.1 acres on Pier 1 to Westerlund Log Handlers of Bremerton, Wash., for $11,208 per month – around $134,500 a year (and) $80,000 per vessel loaded. Westerlund expects to load one ship a month.

John Estoos, president of the local International Longshore and Warehouse Union, voiced support. Westerlund will be employing longshoremen to move and load logs onto ships, though it’s not clear yet how many longshoremen the project will employ.
