A small shipping start-up called The Containership Co. will launch weekly service next month at the Port of Los Angeles, bolstering shipments by an estimated 250,000 cargo containers annually, officials announced Friday. The Norwegian company will operate from the port’s TraPac terminal, handling cargo shipped directly from the small industrial Chinese port of Taicang, located about 40 miles northwest of Shanghai. The new service could further bolster the Port of Los Angeles’ efforts to recover from a national recession that has led to a sharp drop in shipments over the past two years.
