Three giant cranes from China sailed under the Bay Bridge on Tuesday morning on their way to the Port of Oakland, barely clearing the bottom of the span. The cranes, bought by international shipper Evergreen Marine Corp., weigh about 1,500 tons each and can stretch as high as 324 feet. The clearance was tight going under the Golden Gate and Bay spans, 14 feet for the first and 9 for the second.

The cranes are Super Post-Panamax models. Their booms can reach more than 200 feet, unloading a wider shipping freighter that has become popular in recent years. The port has 18 such cranes in place. … The three new cranes will take a few months to be installed and become fully operational.
