Haiti's Main Port Not Operational

Haitis main port collapsed in the earthquake.

Haiti’s main port has “collapsed and is not operational,” says a Maersk Line representative. Tuesday’s earthquake has left the main dock at the Port-au-Prince harbor partially submerged. Cranes that moved containers on and off ships at the port are now partially under water and listing badly. The disarray at the port is shaping up to be a major obstacle to the relief effort. Ships carrying supplies have nowhere to dock. Numerous maritime companies are currently trying to devise stop-gap strategies, but no plan is in place yet.
